Simulating Knitted Cloth at the Yarn Level
This is some pretty fabulous research going on at Cornell by Jonathan Kaldor, Doug L. James, and Steve Marschner.

Skim through the paper and you'll see all your favorite stitches. Watch the movie. It's a simulation and it's amazing.

Dude. Simulating the forces between each loop of yarn? Crazy!

Though I admit, the movie's yarn looks a little too... heavy? Slippery? It's a good simulation, but something's not quite right.

(And, er, I'm such a fangirl that one of my first reactions was "I wonder what the Yarn Harlot would say to all this math?" Heh.)

For me the movie is hard to contextualize since it's a bunch of yarn "dropping from the sky". I expect it to be faster if it's just being dropped even if it is being slowed by the incline.
